The following list has been compiled with the aim of sharing some of the books and authors that ProofReadChina’s translators have enjoyed and benefited from learning about in their Chinese studies. The first four books are considered to be the ‘four classics’ here in China (that’s what Chinese people will tell you anyway) and are a little difficult to read in Chinese, but abridged versions are easy to find. There are also many TV series and movies that have been adapted from them which will help you to understand the general storyline. Most Chinese are extremely familiar with their contents and many idioms and expressions originate from them. The other books on this slightly eclectic list are a little easier to read and are a good way to learn new words and expressions, understand aspects of Chinese culture and to self-assess your Chinese level!
1. The Water Margin 《水浒传》
Well known in the West due to a 1970′s Japanese TV series based on the book. It is sometimes named ‘Outlaws of the Marsh’ which better describes the story that details the trials and tribulations of a group of outlaws during the Song Dynasty.
